A crash with a rideshare or delivery driver involves more insurance than an ordinary collision. The driver has a personal policy, the company carries its own coverage, and which one applies often depends on what the app was doing at that moment.
The questions that decide it
- Was the driver logged in to the app at the time?
- Had they accepted a trip and were they on the way to collect someone?
- Was a passenger in the car, or a delivery under way?
- Were you the passenger, another driver, or someone on foot or a bicycle?
What to collect
Take screenshots of the trip in your own app if you were the passenger: the driver’s name, the car, the route and the times. If you were in another vehicle, note any company sticker on the windscreen and ask the driver directly whether they were working. Police reports do not always record it.
These claims often involve more than one insurer at once, each pointing at the other. Keeping your own record from the start makes it much harder for the question to get lost.
